Board of Trustees

Our trustees all live or work in Surrey and come from diverse backgrounds including business, public agencies and the voluntary sectors. They play an active role in supporting the work that we do.

Sir Stephen LamportSir Stephen Lamport KCVO DL

Sir Stephen Lamport joined the Diplomatic Service in 1974 and served at UKMIS New York in 1974; Third Secretary FCO 1975; Third, later Second Secretary Tehran 1975 - 79; First Secretary FCO 1980; Private Secretary to two successive Ministers of State in the FCO in 1981 - 84; First Secretary in Rome 1984; First Secretary, later Counsellor FCO 1988 - 93. Deputy Private Secretary to The Prince of Wales 1993 - 96. Appointed Private Secretary to The Prince of Wales in October 1996. In October 2002, Sir Stephen joined The Royal Bank of Scotland as Group Director for Public Policy and Government Affairs. In August 2008 became Receiver-General of Westminster Abbey. Sir Stephen was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey in March 2006. Author, with Douglas Hurd, of a political novel, 'The Palace of Enchantments'. Sir Stephen is married with three children.



Patrick DowlingProfessor Patrick Dowling - Chair of Trustees

Professor Patrick Dowling retired as Vice- Chancellor of the University of Surrey at the end of June 2005, a post he held for 11 years. During that time he worked closely with the Surrey Community and was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey in 1999. His understanding of the needs of the Surrey Community was greatly strengthened when he supported his wife Dr Grace Dowling in her role as High Sheriff of Surrey from 2004 to 2005. He was appointed CBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours List in 2001 in recognition of his work at the interface of Higher Education and Industry.

 

Steve BluntSteve Blunt - Clyde & Co
Stephen Blunt is a senior equity partner of Clyde & Co, an international law firm with offices around the world including the City of London and Guildford. Their Guildford office is the largest solicitor's office in Guildford by some margin and one of the largest in the South East. Stephen's speciality is employment law and he has acted for several years as the liaison partner for charities in Surrey. Clyde & Co have assisted with the essential legal work required to establish the Foundation as a limited company and registered charity.



Matthew BowcockMatthew Bowcock - Hazelhurst Trust
Matthew Bowcock is a serial entrepreneur who has been involved in founding technology and biotechnology companies in Australia, the US and the UK. He continues to be a non-executive director of early stage companies but is increasingly involved in philanthropy. He runs the Hazelhurst Trust, a family charitable foundation, which has recently set up a fund within the Community Foundation for Surrey, because he has found that giving is most effective when it is local and professionally managed. Matthew is also Chair of the Community Foundation Network, the national body that co-ordinates activities of Community Foundations throughout the UK and Vice Chair of the Community Foundation for Surrey.

 

Helen BowcockDr Helen Bowcock – Hazelhurst Trust
Dr Helen Bowcock has managed the Human Resources function of a software company from start-up to its successful completion of the first round of venture capital and during that time completed a Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management. More recently she was awarded a PhD in Sociology, supervised by the visionary Professor Frank Furedi, author of Paranoid Parenting. She is an alumna of The Philanthropy Workshop, an international programme run by the Institute for Philanthropy and recently researched and wrote Hidden Surrey: Why local giving is needed to strengthen our communities. She is also a Trustee of The Hazelhurst Trust.

 

Richard Edmondson - Roffe Swayne Chartered Accountants
Richard is a chartered accountant and a senior partner with Roffe Swayne, an independent accountancy practice based in Godalming. The firm has some 70 staff and provides a range of professional services to individuals, businesses and charities. When away from the office Richard is a keen golfer and tennis player.

 

David FrankDavid Frank

David Frank spent his entire professional career in the City. He joined Slaughter and May in 1977, qualified in 1979 and became a partner in 1986. Clients included investment banks, multi-national corporations and private equity houses. In 1993 he became Head of the Firm's  Capital Markets practice and in 2001 he became the Firm's first Practice Partner, working alongside the Senior Partner in executing the Firm's domestic and international strategy and taking responsibility for the allocation of resource within the Firm. He retired in 2008 and has since developed a portfolio of charitable interests.

Peter HampsonPeter Hampson
Peter Hampson CBE,OstJ,QPM, LLb (AKC), is a Surrey resident and formerley Director General of The National Criminal Intelligence Service (03-06); Chief Constable West Mercia Constabulary (99-03) and Assistant Chief Constable, Surrey Police (94-96). He is a Trustee of The Surrey Community Foundation, The Police Rehabilitation Trust and a Governor at Treloar's College.




Bishop Christopher HillBishop Christopher Hill - Bishop of Guildford
The Rt. Revd. Christopher Hill has been the Bishop of Guildford since November 2004. Educated at King's College, London he was previously the Bishop of Stafford and has also been the Archbishop of Canterbury's Secretary for Ecumenical Affairs, Honorary Canon of Canterbury Cathedral and Canon Residentiary and Precentor of St. Paul's Cathedral. He was Chaplain to HM The Queen from 1987 to 1996. Bishop Christopher welcomes any opportunity to strengthen his relationships within the local community and his role with the Foundation is an expression of this.

 

 

 Gordon Lee SteereGordon Lee-Steere - Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey
Gordon Lee-Steere is a farmer and landowner in Surrey; He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge and became a Computer Consultant 1966 – 1974. He is a past member of the Mole Valley District Council and former President of the Country Landowners Association 1987 – 1989. He is currently Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Chairman of the Rural Housing Trust and Trustee of the Henry Smith's Charity. He has Property and Farming interests in Australia and England.



Jim McAllisterJim McAllister - The Rutland Group - Dunsfold Park
Jim McAllister is Chief Executive of The Rutland Group, a privately owned property development, investment and management company, which he founded in 1984. Since its inception, The Rutland Group has involved itself closely with the local communities within which it works. Following its acquisition of Dunsfold Park in Surrey with a joint venture partner The Royal Bank of Scotland, it is delighted to be a founder member of the Surrey Community Foundation, which espouses the principles, aims and values which the Group has promoted elsewhere in the UK

 

Jim McAllisterTracey Reddings – SG Hambros Bank Ltd
Tracey Reddings is a banker with 25 years experience operating in the private, public and charitable sectors. She is currently Head of UK Private Banking for SG Hambros Bank Ltd. She was formerly Chief Executive of CAF Bank Ltd where she led it through a period of significant growth and change. She has a strong track record and reputation for delivering innovations and building partnerships to create new business and brand value and in 2007 was awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise for Product Innovation. Tracey is a trustee on several charities and Non Executive Director for Charity Business Limited. She also holds an MBA, is a Chartered Director, Fellow of the Institute of Directors and Chartered Management Institute and a Freeman with International Guild of Bankers.

 

Lavinia SealyLavinia Sealy - County Councillor
Lavinia Sealy has been a Surrey County Councillor since 1997 and has had extensive involvement in the Voluntary and Community Sector throughout the county helping to form and now implement the Surrey Compact and also being involved with bodies responsible for countryside, education in schools and community services, including youth and culture.





Andrew WatesAndrew Wates - Wates Group Ltd
Andrew Wates is Chairman of Wates Group, one of the UK's largest private construction companies. For over 100 years the Group has been committed to supporting and improving the communities in which it works. In 2003 the company headquarters were re-located to Leatherhead, and it hosted Surrey Community Foundation until it moved to Guildford in 2004. Through its involvement with the Foundation, Wates now looks forward to creating stronger bonds with the Surrey community
