How To Give
Individuals
'Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.'
Margaret Mead
Giving to the Community Foundation for Surrey is designed to be as simple as possible. We are here to advise at all times so do feel free to contact our Executive Director Wendy Varcoe if you would like to discuss
There are several different giving options:
1. Set up a Named Fund
If you have over £10,000 to donate you can set up your own individual or family fund. We can do all of the initial set up for you through to managing the on-going administration and grant distribution. All you need to do is:

Choose a name: This can be in your own name, or in a name that protects your wishes for anonymity.
Decide who benefits: Your fund can be used for general charitable purposes or you can specify a particular issue and/or geographic area that you would like to support (e.g. to support projects helping disadvantaged children in Reigate and Banstead)
Decide what level of involvement you would like: You can take an active involvement in deciding which projects to support, meet beneficiaries and be part of the grant making process. Or, if you prefer a more hands-off approach, we can do all of this for you, keeping you up-to-date with developments.
Decide the right type of Fund:
We divide our funds into two types:
- Immediate Impact Fund – With an initial investment of £10,000 or above you can establish an Immediate Impact Fund where the total value of the donation is distributed as grants in accordance to your wishes to meet the immediate needs in the community.
- Permanent Endowment Fund - A permanent capital fund can be established with a minimum level of donation of £25,000. This is invested and the income generated is used year after year to make grants in agreement with your wishes and interests. The value of the original sum donated, either as a one-off or over a number of years, is protected for the benefit of communities forever.
For those investing £15,000 and above in a Permanent Fund before March 2011 we are able to match your donation £1 or £1 with the Government's Grassroots Grants Scheme. This is a fantastic way to make your money go a long, long way! With gift aid your money almost trebles.
For example:
Donation £15,000
Add Gift Aid of 28% - £19,200
Match under Grassroots -£1 for £1
Total gift value - £38,400
Or some donors choose to have their money invested in a Combination Fund which has the benefits of both of the above.
2. Contribute to one of our specific funds.
We have a number of individual funds which act as pots of pooled resources to benefit voluntary and charitable groups throughout the whole of Surrey. Click onto a fund of interest to you to find out more.

You can give any amount to any fund of your choice either as a one-off donation or a regular contribution. Donate easily online through JustGiving by clicking on the appropriate fund. Or send us a cheque, made payable to the Community Foundation for Surrey indicating which fund you would like your money to go into.
If you are a tax payer JustGiving reclaims 28% of your donation in Gift Aid so that your money goes even further to directly benefit some community projects
3. Donate a gift of shares or assets
We are able to accept all kinds of gifts including shares and assets such as property. This is a really tax efficient way of giving where the benefit to the charity may be many times more than the cost to the donor. Individuals can reclaim income tax relief of up to 40% of the full market value of the quoted shares and be exempt from any capital gains.
4. Donate through your tax return
Self assessment tax payers can nominate a charity to benefit from all or a part of any tax rebate due to them. Our charity number is 1111600 and can be quoted on your tax return.
5. Leave a legacy through your Will
With your Will you can not only provide for your family's future, but also support some of the local causes you really care about. A legacy is the greatest opportunity most people have to make a really substantial gift to charity. Leaving a legacy to the Community Foundation, however small, could help to improve the lives of those in your community for years to come.
There are numerous ways of leaving a gift to the fund in your Will. Care should be taken to ensure that your Will is drafted properly to give you the confidence that what you want to happen does happen.
Through your Will you can leave a particular item, a specific sum of money, a share of your estate or even establish a personal fund.
