Hidden Surrey Report
'Hidden Surrey'
Why local giving is needed to strengthen our communities
by Dr Helen Bowcock
Community Foundation for Surrey launched its report 'Hidden Surrey', written by Dr Helen Bowcock at an event hosted by Michael and Sarah More-Molyneux at Loseley Park in March this year.
The important document provides a revealing perspective on the surprising depth of social disadvantage within Surrey. It is based on extensive research and consultation with voluntary and community groups and summarises the relevant key statistics. It also includes an inspiring range of examples of how people are currently helping those in need and building stronger communities in Surrey.
Dr Helen Bowcock makes a powerful case for increased local philanthropy to address the community needs highlighted in her report.
The report;
- Highlights issues surrounding the reality of life in Surrey rather than the perceived image;
- Looks at specific geographical areas of deprivation;
- Highlights funding issues and problems this is causing voluntary organisations;
- Shows how powerful voluntary organisations can be in local community and the need for them by providing a number of case studies across Surrey; and
- Makes a strong case for community philanthropy.
This 4 page leaflet provides a summary of the key points in the report and some examples of local community groups. For a full copy of the report please click here.

Grassroots Challenge
A powerful case is made within the report 'Hidden Surrey' for increased local philanthropy to address Surrey's community needs on both an immediate and permanent basis.
For those who want to support their local communities there is no better time. We are able to match on a pound for pound basis from the Grassroots scheme all new permanent funds donated to support local communities, making this a very effective way to meet local needs in Surrey.
For example: a £10,000 donation with gift aid becomes £12,800 which can then benefit from a Grassroots match of £12,800 resulting in a fund of £25,600. Thus, higher tax payers can set up a £25,600 permanent fund at a net cost of £7,200.
