Local schools sharpen up their Maths skills with the support of Electronic Arts
186 AS students from schools across Surrey will go head to head on Weds 3rd February for the Surrey SATRO Maths Challenge at the University of Surrey. The event has been supported by the first grant from a new fund established by Electronic Arts through the Community Foundation for Surrey. This permanent fund is part of the Community Foundation's £2 million challenge target to establish permanent funds for Surrey communities through the Government's Grassroots Programme.
The Maths Challenge involves students competing against the clock to tackle a range of problems. The problems include concepts taught at A/S level but also issues that they might encounter if they studied maths at degree level. The involvement of university staff and students as facilitators enables the students to get a greater appreciation of degree level study and aims to make maths fun. Students from a huge variety of Surrey schools will benefit including Guildford's George Abbot, County and St Peters Schools.
The fund from Electronic Arts was set up with the aim of supporting voluntary groups and charities working on educational programmes involving the STEAM subjects Science (computer science & Physics) Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. It also supports children and young people in need in Guildford and surrounding areas. Kate Booth, Outreach Manager at Electronic Arts says, "We're delighted to be able to support the Maths Challenge and hope that this event inspires and encourages students to consider on-going study in this area."
Professor Patrick Dowling, Chairman of the Community Foundation for Surrey, says "By establishing a fund with us we are able to double Electronic Art's contribution to their local community through the national Grassroots scheme funded by the Government. This means that even more local charities and voluntary groups can benefit from their support. We have the challenge of meeting a £2 million target in Surrey and so are delighted that Electronic Arts is helping to meet this need."
The Community Foundation for Surrey was established four years ago, aiming to inspire local giving for local needs. The Community Foundation works with both donors who want to give something back to their local communities and the charities and voluntary groups providing vital services for local people. Individuals, families and companies can establish a fund within the Community Foundation which supports a growing programme of grant-making to communities across Surrey.
