Supporting
people at a time of need - our new Maimie Mollan Grassroots Fund
Our funds
are established by individuals, families and businesses that want to make
a difference in their area. Occasionally we also receive legacies and
charitable bequests, according to the last wishes of individual donors.
Our new
fund was created from a legacy left by Maimie Mollan, a widely known
local artist. During her lifetime she wanted her home to be a sanctuary
for those seeking solace, peace and serenity. Her Fund reflects those
wishes and will benefit those in hardship or need.
This
£200,000 permanent fund has already made its first grant award of £1,900
to Surrey Crossroads, which provides support to carers of those with
cancer or life threatening illness.

Get in the frame
for our Photography competition!
Surrey residents involved in a charitable or
voluntary organisation are being encouraged to enter our prestigious new
photography competition. We want to raise awareness of the extraordinary
work done in the community by charitable groups. Entries to the
competition, which has been sponsored by two local businesses, Clyde & Co and Churchouse Financial Planning, can
depict any aspect of the organisation’s work with the aim of highlighting
how they benefit local residents and help make a difference.
The
competition will be judged by the Surrey Advertiser ‘s Chief Photographer
and, the overall winner will receive £500 to donate to the Surrey charity of their choice. Winners from two
age categories will each receive £250 for their charities and their
photos, along with other Highly Commended work, will be shown as an
exhibition – ‘A Celebration of Giving’ , at Guildford
Cathedral from 3 February – 7 March 2011.
For more
information about the competition visit our website www.communityfoundationsurrey.org.uk.
Good luck!

Celebrating
5 years of giving in Surrey
Over 160 guests joined staff and trustees
and the Ambassador for Philanthropy, Dame Stephanie Shirley, at an
evening at Clandon
Park in September
to celebrate our 5th birthday. Since we were established in
2005, we have built funds of £5.3 million, distributed grants of £1.8
million to 638 charitable groups and benefited over 18,000 individuals.
The event,
which was generously supported by Societe Generale Private Banking
Hambros and Newton Investment Management, was an opportunity for us to
thank some of the many people that have
contributed to this success.
In addition
to our birthday celebrations we are also celebrating recently receiving a
glowing quality accreditation award from the Community Foundation
Network.

Focus on……The Surrey Sports Fund
With
London 2012 on the horizon, helping people who would not otherwise be
able to access sport is more topical than ever. Our collective fund, The
Surrey Sports Fund, is doing exactly that and has been able to support a
number of extraordinary projects across the county.
The Woking
Minders Football Club is one project that has benefited. This fantastic
initiative helps support adults with mental health problems and related
issues, such as drug and alcohol abuse. Many find that the benefits of
regular exercise, as well as the discipline and camaraderie of training
has a profound impact on their life. A £1,500 grant from our Sports Fund
has enabled them to continue playing in the Positive Mental Attitude
League, and made a real difference to some of the individuals involved.
"Since
the start of Woking Minders, 3 of our players are now in full time
employment , another a volunteer, 2 going on coaching courses, and
another 2 on referee courses – the venture into football has been a real
success for our members."
Janie
Cottle, Secretary, Woking Minders
Football Club

Other
projects we have been able to support include Queen Mary Sailability
which provides specialist sailing sessions for children and adults with
learning difficulties and supporting Reigate & Redhill YMCA’s Polybat
sessions for disabled people.
If
you would like to contribute to the Surrey Sports Fund, or set up your
own fund, for projects of interest to you, please contact us.

Inspiring Surrey….

Guildford
Rowing Club recently approached us to ask for funding to help them adapt
boats to enable people with disabilities to get out on the water. Funding
from our Hamilton Fund has enabled them to adapt four boats, making it
possible to establish a special session for people with Multiple
Sclerosis.
We have
been able to support them with two grants totaling £4, 632, helping
people like Claire (above) who now enjoys the benefits of rowing every
Friday.

Helping
your community group communicate
If you are
involved with a Surrey based
voluntary or community group you may be interested to hear about two
local organisations who can help you communicate better:
Eagle
Radio specialises in helping organisations communicate with their
target audience through the use of modern media communications such as
postcasting and social media. They are running a selection of courses
which have been designed for charity and voluntary groups and aim to help
them communicate in a cost effective way. If you would like to find out
more, contact James Posner on 01483 468717 or email podcast@964eagle.co.uk. The
Community Foundation may be able to help with a grant towards the cost of
your training.
Guildford College’s HND Media Studies
students produce highly professional DVDs as part of their ongoing
studies and are currently looking for suitable projects from the
voluntary sector. If you would like to explore the possibility of a free
DVD to help raise awareness for your organisation, get in touch with
Simon Westcott, Senior Lecturer at swestcott@guildford.ac.uk. To
see an example of their work visit our website and click on the inspiring
DVD they made for our 5th birthday.
