Grassroots Challenge – matching donations £1 for £1

Our Grassroots Grants Programme can match all donations to permanent funds £1 for £1 meaning that even more organisations and voluntary groups can be helped with your gift. When giftaid is added, donations grow substantially. For example a donation of £5,000 becomes £6,400 with giftaid and then becomes £12,800 when matched – a 156% increase!

Comic Relief Deadlines

Kaye Family Fund Image

Through the Kaye Family fund we have been able to provide £4,295 to the White Lodge Centre, Chertsey towards the costs of running a parent/toddler group for disabled children.

Welcome to our new e-newsletter. This is a special year for the Community Foundation for Surrey. We celebrate our 5th birthday in September and, in the time that we have been established, have already been able to support 535 projects in Surrey, with £1.6 million in grants. That’s a direct benefit to over 15,000 people in our community! Importantly, we’ve also built our endowment funds to £3 million to date, meaning that Surrey organisations will continue to receive grants forever as the interest from this fund continues to grow.

On behalf of all the trustees and members of staff I would like to wish you a Happy Easter

Launch of our new website

We’re delighted to introduce our new website which includes some interactive features and more news about how we are supporting your local community. In addition to being able to set up an individual named fund with us, those wishing to donate can now do so online directly through JustGiving. Applying for a grant is also made even easier with our online grant application process. If you live in an area that has its own community fund, these now have their own dedicated pages so that you can follow updates on how your funds are growing and what is being supported. Have a look and see what is happening in your area.

Thank you to Freehand for helping us get this off the ground!

How we’re helping to make a difference in your community

Focus on……the Leatherhead Youth Project (LYP)

This inspiring project works to support positive change in young people from North Leatherhead, whether it’s improved focus and behaviour at school or happiness with life at home. Young people are given opportunity to socialise at the LYP café away from the influence of drugs or alcohol, and also invited to participate in activities such as the BLAZE project, which was devised to inspire increased confidence and responsibility in teenage boys.

Through the East Court Fund we’ve been able to support LYP over a number of years and a recent £3,500 grant from our Comic Relief funds has enabled them to launch a new training project enabling ‘at risk’ youngsters to design, film and edit material for the in-house television channel.

"Over the years funding from the Community Foundation for Surrey has helped us sustain ongoing projects and have the flexibility to deliver new projects where needs arise, making a huge difference to how we are able to support young people locally."

Andy Gill, Community Projects Manager, Leatherhead Youth Project

New environmental fund established

Environmental projects throughout Surrey can now benefit from a new fund that has been established specifically to support projects and activities that enhance and improve the quality of the environment. The Orchid Trust Grassroots Fund will focus on wildlife conservation, raising awareness of, and access to wildlife and the environment, community environmental projects and protecting or improving the lives of animals.

Projects that have already benefited from this fund include a two year grant to support the Bourne Conservation Group and improving access for families and the disabled at Lingfield Nature Reserve. If you would like to discuss funding for your environmental project contact our Grants Officer, Emma Wolfe on 01483 409230.

Inspiring Surrey

One of the best things about our work is hearing about the incredible efforts that are being undertaken all over the county to support those in need. Here’s just one of the recent projects we have been able to help:

The Holywell Gardening Project – Whilst caring for his elderly mother, the Chairman of this environmental committee noticed that the elderly residents of this highly urbanised area in Stanwell South were struggling to reach the only small lawn accessible to them by their block of flats. Wheelchairs and zimmer frames meant that many were virtually home-bound without any access to green space. He established the Holywell Gardening Project out of his own pocket, providing hanging baskets and window boxes to cheer up residents. This project was so successful that last year it won a community Award from ‘Spelthorne in Bloom’ in appreciation of its work to improve the environment for local residents. We’ve been able to provide a £3,290 Grassroots Grant to enable this project to continue and develop, enabling many of these isolated elderly residents to enjoy the pleasures of growing plants and flowers in their own homes.
