Riding for the DisabledRiding for the Disabled, Horsehills

"Our grant has provided the opportunity for children to achieve well beyond their own and their parent's expectations. Their families are so grateful."

Horse riding is of enormous benefit to the health and wellbeing of disabled children who attend classes at Horsehills. It is good physiotherapy and, for some children, it may be the only sport in which they can participate. Sessions are designed to develop social and communication skills and improve self-confidence. Children not only progress individually but have the opportunity to compete and work for graded attainments, with some great results! These achievements instil a sense of pride in each individual. By providing them with a Grassroots Grant of £3,202 we were able to support their running costs so that children can continue to benefit from the extraordinary work of all the Horsehills volunteers.

Age ConcernAge Concern, Merstham, Reigate and Redhill

Age Concern, Merstham, Reigate and Redhill works to support elderly people within its area and runs a hugely popular befriending service for older people who may be isolated and lonely. Many of their clients do not have regular contact with relatives, and find it hard to get out due to disability or lack of confidence. The befriending service can be a real lifeline for many, giving them someone to talk to and an opportunity to venture out. There is an increasing need for this service and yet, with a shortage of volunteer befrienders, Age Concern has been limited in how many it can support.

We were able to give a £2,000 grant from the East Court Fund to enable the charity to run a promotional campaign to recruit new volunteers. The success of this will allow Age Concern to provide a service to an increased number of older people in the local area.
